Jiang Mi had not answered Jiang Jingxiu's calls since learning of her pregnancy. He had called three times, but she had pretended not to hear, hoping he would forget about her.
However, when she returned home after her part-time job, she saw the man she hadn't seen in over half a month standing at her doorstep. The sight startled her, shaking off all her fatigue and putting every cell in her body on high alert.
Why would he come looking for her here?
Did he know something?
Did he already know about Mianmian's existence!
A barrage of questions made Jiang Mi feel as if she were facing a formidable enemy. In the middle of winter, cold sweat soaked through her undergarments.
Jiang Jingxiu's gaze was dark, and he looked at the stunned woman with a playful expression.
"Seeing me... you seem very scared," Jiang Jingxiu said, smoking and narrowing his eyes at her.
"No... no, I'm just a little surprised. How did you end up at my door?" Jiang Mi forced a smile.
She knew very well that Jiang Jingxiu was not easily fooled, so she immediately mustered all her energy to cope. She had been an actress before, even playing a supporting role, so she had some acting skills.
She quickly employed her professional acting skills from her past, instantly making herself appear more natural.
"Aren't you going to invite me in for a seat?" Jiang Jingxiu exhaled a smoke ring, his sharp phoenix eyes narrowing slightly, his thin lips conveying only indifference.
"It's not that I don't want to invite my uncle in, but my place is very small, and I fear I would tarnish your presence," Jiang Mi said, looking at him with apparent sincerity.
Jiang Jingxiu suddenly sneered, "Take away that hypocritical face of yours and open the door!"
Jiang Mi, "..."
She really wanted to curse him, but she dared not defy this man now. She could only take out her key and open the door. After opening it, Jiang Mi walked in first, her eyes scanning the living room. Fortunately, there was nothing in the living room that he shouldn't see.
She turned to the man who followed her in and said, "Uncle, please have a seat for a moment, I'll get you some water."
After saying that, she turned and darted into the bathroom.
Jiang Jingxiu watched coldly with no visible reaction. His gaze swept across the cramped living room. He sat down on the worn fabric sofa, his tall frame leaning back, his long legs crossed as he looked at the bathroom door.
Jiang Mi quickly put away all her daughter's belongings and flushed the toilet before emerging. "Sorry, nature called. I'll get you water now."
There were still her daughter's things in their shared bedroom, but tidying them up now was unrealistic. She just had to ensure Jiang Jingxiu didn't enter her and her daughter's room.
Jiang Mi poured Jiang Jingxiu a glass of water. Jiang Jingxiu's dark eyes stared intently at her, as if trying to see through her. Jiang Mi looked at him nervously, her face feeling stiff. She rubbed her hands nervously. "Uncle, what did you want to see me for?"
"A while ago, you tried every means to get close to me, and now you've suddenly gone missing... can I assume that your goal in approaching me has been achieved?" Jiang Jingxiu flicked the ash into a water stain, his eyes fixed on her coldly.
Jiang Mi felt her breath catch. She knew Jiang Jingxiu was a very smart and cunning man, but she hadn't expected his mind to be so deep. She knew she had to do something to dispel his idea, otherwise, the child in her belly might not be born even if it was conceived.
