Chapter 322: A Detailed Pretense (2)
A reasonable explanation.
"I see."
Dawson eased a little. "Our pack members work as CEOs, lawyers, engineers and even researchers." His chest swelled with pride. "I, too, work with several financial advisors. Investing in shares and land helps us in many ways that we cannot explain. I mean, humans might be weak, but they are quite smart when it comes to making money. If you want, I can help you invest, Alpha Sokolov. I promise that you will be satisfied with my work."
His beast grumbled, not liking the technical talk at all.
"I will think about it." Killian glanced at the photographs behind him, peering at them as if he could see something that others couldn’t. He calmly remarked, "What about your beasts? Are they alright with this?" He pointed to the photograph where Edward was playing with the young ones. He looked human. Pretended to be human even when he was not one. The pretence was so good that if Killian didn’t know that this man was a shifter, then he, too, would have taken Edward as one.
And that makes him even more dangerous. I have never seen a beast who was content with living like this... not once; even those who grow up among humans are bound to lose control.
Edward’s forehead creased almost imperceptibly. However, he soon smoothed that frown before stating, "Our beasts understand the reason why we need to do this. We are not strong enough to fight with other packs; after all, we have lived among humans for generations. Our wolves understand the necessity of staying in the human settlement for survival."
Killian’s eyes twitched. He had a feeling that there was more to the story, but he still nodded, looking unimpressed. "I would like to take some rest."
"Of course, I can ask Chief Drakon Hart to escort you to your mansion..."
Killian snapped his teeth, and the man closed his mouth right away. A smart move, because Killian was getting annoyed by the talks of humans and their human laws.
Drakon stepped forward. "Please follow me, Alpha Sokolov."
They are weird. If there is nothing wrong, then I will eat like a rabbit for a month, his beast grumbled within him.
And they were going to find it.
Killian followed the man out of the mansion, and Drakon led him to the mansion that was no different from the one where Alpha Edward lived, just a bit smaller.
However, as he walked past the door, Killian noticed something. The man didn’t ring the bell. He straight-up walked inside the mansion without alerting the person staying inside. Killian narrowed his eyes as he stared at the man who had walked inside the mansion without ringing the bell.
And that was not even the weirdest part; the thing that was even weirder was that the mansion was completely bare. There were no signs of life there. There were no photos, nothing personal. Even the pretentious show of wealth done by Edward was much better than this mansion, which didn’t even have a kettle to show that a person lived there.
’There is a sofa, Finn pointed out as if he couldn’t see it.
Killian turned and glanced at his beta, who seemed to be finding everything amusing.
"Lisa".
A new scent joined them, and a fairly young woman with curly auburn hair and baby blue eyes stepped out of the kitchen. She glanced at the two of them before turning to Drakon. "Who are they?"
"They are our guests." Drakon waved his hand behind him before pointing at Killian. "He is Alpha Sokolov, the alpha of lycans and behind him is his beta, Finn."
The woman turned and looked at the two men, her eyes flashing with a glint that Killian caught, but it soon disappeared as she smiled at them. "It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alpha Sokolov. I am Lisa Clarke."
"Are you the owner of this house?" Killian asked without bothering to greet the woman.
"Yes, Alpha Sokolov," the woman responded. But he could notice the tightness around her smile. There was something wrong with the look in her eyes and her smell—it was deceptive. "I hope that you will have a pleasant stay."
Killian glanced at the kitchen, where a coffee mug was placed on the stand with two cups. He noticed that they looked quite new. As if they had never been used and were brought here in a hurry. "It seems quite big... I mean for a young woman like you."
"Well, even though it is under my name... The property still belongs to the pack," the woman laughed. Her laugh sounded a bit high-pitched and fake. "So, they handed it to me according to the money that I bring in. Anyway, this house can serve many purposes, as I am the only one living here. You see, the mansion is big enough for our guests to stay without any worries." She pointed to the room at the other end of the corridor. "I usually stay there, and as I am alone, I don’t need to use up the entire space."
The explanation sounded as fake as the house where they were standing. There was practically not a single personal thing present in the entire mansion. It was as blank as the mind of the man beside him.
Strange. This was really strange; looking at the house in front of him, Killian knew that their efforts to prove the legitimacy of their pack, their actions and everything else were going to be futile.
His suspicions, if possible, turned even deeper.
I cannot smell the scent of this woman around this house; it’s faint, like she just arrived here. ’As if she lives somewhere else,’ his beast spoke in his mind, and Killian agreed with him. Edward might have given him a reasonable explanation for the so-called human integration of the pack, but Killian didn’t believe a thing. In fact, after looking at the mansion in front of him, he was even more certain that this was nothing but just a pretence that they were holding in front of him.
An act to impress.
