Chapter 114: Suspicious Town
The second day was also smooth.
Other than some scattered zombies, the convoy didn’t encounter any major obstacles.
On the third day, the convoy entered a small town.
’This...’ Mo Chenxuan narrowed his eyes.
At the same time, he reached for a walkie-talkie.
"Be careful. Don’t let your guard down." He said into the walkie-talkie.
"Chenxuan, is something wrong?" Qin Wu asked, looking at Mo Chenxuan with a surprised expression.
From her perspective, the town was ordinary.
Although it was a little deserted, she didn’t think much of it because it was normal for small towns to be deserted after being cleared by armies and superpower teams.
"There are too many abandoned cars in this town." Mo Chenxuan said.
"Too many abandoned cars?’ Qin Wu raised her eyebrow in question.
At the same time, she looked around but soon frowned.
As Mo Chenxuan observed, there were so many cars that the town resembled a giant parking lot.
"Why are there so many cars?" Qin Wu couldn’t help but wonder.
"Wu’er, look inside the cars." Mo Chenxuan reminded and Qin Wu immediately did so.
A moment later, her eyes widened and cold sweat appeared on her forehead.
"They are full of supplies." She exclaimed.
"Indeed." Mo Chenxuan nodded and quickly continued.
"They are full of supplies but there are no survivors to be seen. Where is everyone?"
"Chenxuan, what are you thinking?"
"Something is lurking in this small town."
While speaking, Mo Chenxuan used his spiritual sense to thoroughly check the surroundings.
Unfortunately, his investigation revealed nothing.
He found no survivors, no zombies, no mutant plants, no mutant beasts...
Based on this investigation, the survivors seemed to have disappeared into thin air.
"What are we dealing with?" Qin Wu muttered while trying to recall everything she heard in her previous life.
However, nothing came to mind and she couldn’t help but frown.
"Regardless of what’s going on, we can assume it has nothing to do with survivors." Mo Chenxuan said.
"Why do you say that?" Qin Wu asked.
"Ordinary survivors would never leave this many supplies behind."
"Now that you mention it..."
Excluding Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu, several others, including Guan Sheng, Chu Wan’er, and Xuanyuan Yi, had also noticed the abnormality of the small town.
Soon after, a yellow flag was raised from the window of the tenth car in the convoy.
Seeing this, the first, second, third, fourth, ..., cars raised yellow flags, alerting everyone that they had stepped into an unknown situation.
In the tenth car, Guan Sheng narrowed his eyes with a thoughtful expression.
"Captain Guan, should we turn around?" A soldier asked.
"I am afraid it’s already too late." Guan Sheng answered.
"What do you mean?"
"First, there is no space to turn around. If we want to go back, we can only reverse from the last car in the convoy."
"Second, look at the abandoned cars. None are damaged and all the doors are closed. What do you think this means?"
"I..." The soldier started, narrowed his eyes and frowned before continuing.
"The victims didn’t sense danger and didn’t try to escape. Captain Guan, could the culprit be some kind of invisible monster?"
"I am afraid it’s not that simple." Guan Sheng said.
In fact, he was also at a loss.
However, he was the task commander and couldn’t show his confusion.
After thinking about it, he reached for his walkie-talkie and contacted his two deputies.
"Any ideas?" He asked.
"Other than the cars, I don’t see anything unusual." Ning San reported.
"Me too. I know there is something wrong but I don’t sense danger." Ling Hua said.
This was the most horrifying aspect of the current situation.
After awakening their abilities, superpowers gained a keen sense of danger.
Even when they couldn’t see the source of danger, they would feel it and instinctively know how to avoid it.
However, their sixth sense was failing at the most critical moment.
At the moment, everyone knew they were in danger but no one knew where the danger was coming from or how to avoid it.
’It’s bad.’ Ling Hua thought, her eyebrows creased in a frown.
Without exaggeration, their current convoy consisted of the most powerful people in the city B base.
If the convoy was inexplicably wiped out, not only would they fail the mission but the city B base would lose powerful manpower and become vulnerable to external attacks.
Thinking of this, Ling Hua narrowed her eyes and clenched her hand around the walkie-talkie.
"We need to retreat." She said in a resolute voice.
"It may be our only way." Guan Sheng said and sighed.
A moment later, he regained his composure and spoke into the walkie-talkie.
"Vice-captain Ning, relay the order. Retreat from the last car."
"Got it."
Less than a minute later, Mo Chenxuan received the order and immediately retreated.
Because his and Qin Wu’s car was last in the convoy, their retreat was the fastest and they soon exited the town.
Over the next hour, the cars exited one after the other and finally, the lead car safely left the town.
Seeing this, everyone was flabbergasted.
After all, they had all been expecting something to happen during their retreat.
"What in the world is going on?" Ning San couldn’t help but wonder.
Standing beside him, Guan Sheng and Ling Hua had solemn expressions.
If possible, they didn’t want to bother with the town.
After all, they were on a mission and collecting fuel was their topmost priority.
Unfortunately, the town was the only way forward.
If they didn’t pass through the town, they would have to turn around and try their luck on one of the routes they previously rejected.
"We can’t risk the entire convoy." Guan Sheng said with a thoughtful expression.
"Captain, what are you thinking?"
"Let’s form a small exploratory team. We will decide what to do after figuring out what we are dealing with."
"Will anyone volunteer for this team?" Ling Hua couldn’t help but worry.
"We have discretion to issue sub-tasks in pursuance of the main task. I don’t believe we won’t attract takers if I issue a sub-task with generous rewards."
