Chapter 41: Leaving The Packs(Maze Forest)

DAVINA

Chris shook his head, taking a step away from me, "I am sorry."

The papers dropped to the floor as I closed in on him. My fists clenched, teeth gnashing, "You are sorry?"

"How dare you?" I growled, low and dangerous, and at that moment, his face drained of color as he staggered to the wall.

"What’s wrong with you, Davina?" He pointed at me, "Your eyes—"

"Don’t fucking speak!" I breathed heavily, almost curling my hand around his neck, just like Uriel had done earlier. I wanted to stab my claws into his flesh and see him bleed out.

It was the same feeling, the same killing intent I felt.

But then, I closed my eyes. This time, I surprisingly could control myself.

"We need to get out of here, Davina. The guards will surround the house soon and get them. We can get away from the Packs ourselves, and live together—"

"Shut it." I sneered as I pointed at myself, "I am also in danger. If the Alpha gets them, then I am done for too."

"Didn’t you think about that before you ratted your mouth? All because of what? Money?"

"It’s you." He said.

"You don’t know what you are saying." I scoffed and the next second, I turned to get my mates. But they were already up on their feet.

I moved out of the way, as they approached Chris. His legs shook, and soon, his pants went darker and wet. He peed himself.

I couldn’t continue to defend him or stop the brothers from breaking his bones. After all, I had trusted him and even apologized to him countless times.

But they didn’t push him hard, or try to harm him anymore. They took whatever money was on him, and got him to get clothes from his chest.

A minute later, I was dressed in an oversized shirt and pants as they pulled me toward the door.

"Watch your back, Chris." Shawn pointed at him, with a cold gaze that could freeze anyone in its way.

The brothers would definitely come for him. If they ever stepped foot in the Packs again, Chris wouldn’t be safe.

We stepped out, but then there were no guards in sight, unlike what Chris had claimed. But we ran, still. Moving deeper into the thick forest that lined the borders.

But then, the brothers stopped and turned to look in the direction we came from.

"Something feels weird."

The forest was quiet, and the road leading up to Chris’s house was deserted too.

"Did that bastard really report us?" Uriel asked.

I sighed, glancing back at the road and wondering if I had misunderstood Chris. He really did agree to have reported us, right?

I held my head, my hands raking in my hair as I sighed again and something flashed in my eyes. I had a paper in my breast pocket and the next second, I pulled it out.

"Look at this..." I whispered.

It was Chris’s note, and as my gaze roamed through the hurriedly written letters, my eyes blurred at the edges.

"I couldn’t stand them in my house, Davina but I know you are in danger. I told the guards a different location and you all can escape if you hurry. I won’t be here to help you if you get caught."

It was all a show, just to get us to safety and keep himself safe too. I regretted snapping at him and even wanting to slash him with my claws.

"So, he is not so stupid, is he?" Ethan sneered.

"Is that what you are concerned about? What if you all had killed him out of anger?"

"It didn’t happen, right?" He shrugged.

I rolled my eyes, as I tore up the note.

"What do we do now? The guards will get to find out Chris’ lie soon enough. We can escape now, right?"

"We can’t." They shook their heads.

"What? Why?" My brows creased. "The coast is clear..."

Uriel shook his head, as he pointed in a direction I couldn’t even comprehend.

"We decided the only place we could run to is our mother’s pack. And the security at the borders of our pack and her pack is immense."

"We need to leave at night, when their guard has eased."

I sighed, as I slowly sank to the forest floor.

"We have to stay here until the full moon?"

"We leave before the full moon. All Pack members have to be at the square at the peak time, that is our best time to escape."

"Yes, you are right." I bit on my lips, but then glanced at the sky. My eyes darted, seeing that the sun was much brighter today, but my mind was gloomy as goosebumps lined my skin as I curled against a tree.

"Is there anything bothering you?" Shawn sat by my side, his gaze narrowing with suspicion.

"Uhmm, nothing." I shook my head.

"Are you sure? You were different earlier..."

"When?" My gaze darted to Ethan and Uriel, and they also had questions in their eyes.

"With Chris. Your eyes, they changed. And we all felt it, this strange energy inside you."

I swallowed, as my lips parted, "Strange energy?"

"Yes." Ethan nodded. "Is that why your eyes change so suddenly? And at the river, you were—"

"It’s nothing." I shook my head. "It’s probably your imagination."

"If there is anything we need to know, you should tell us, Vina."

With the three pairs of eyes on me, as if they could drill the answers out of my head, I almost spilled.

However, the idea was insane. A blood wolf inside me? One that had disappeared ever since we left the river and I couldn’t even feel or talk to her anymore?

The brothers would probably think I was crazy. I didn’t have any sacred blood in me, to possess such a self-acclaimed and unknown powerful being.

"It’s nothing." I shook my head.

Even though they didn’t believe me, the doubts in their eyes, still heavy, I didn’t mind. I turned away from them and I decided I would only tell them everything when I was certain of who Seraphine was.

Night came, and tension increased. The brothers stood on the barks of large trees and I paced around them, looking very distressed.

"You have to save your energy, Davina."

"I can’t..." I whispered. "I am too anxious. I don’t want to go back to that damned man."

"I just can’t..."

My eyes blurred, as I slowly sank to the floor, with my head wedged in between my legs. I felt someone crouch beside me. I turned to see Uriel, all smiles while he wiped the tears at the corners of my eyes.

"I could die, so I wouldn’t have to see you go back there."

Death. A word I didn’t want to hear right now. But to the twisted Uriel before me, the warmth in his eyes like a weapon, I knew it was nothing to him.

This was his assurance but I couldn’t accept it.

"I don’t want you dead." I shook my head. "We have to stay together."

"Sure." He nodded, before kissing me lightly.

As soon as he pulled away, Shawn gave the order, "We need to leave now."

I looked up at the sky, the moon already rearing its head and half covered in the dark clouds.

We needed to cross the borders safely before it would come out fully otherwise, the effects would affect the brothers and also deter our journey.

But as we ran across the forest, while I was passed around the brothers’ backs, something didn’t feel right.

Time seemed to run out really fast and even though the brothers were up in their game, running as fast as they could, we soon realized we couldn’t get out of the forest.

It was like a maze, no exit and we couldn’t even locate the entrance.

"What’s happening," I whispered as I looked up at the sky again and the moon was out fully. The glow was different, with unusual red streaks on it.

At that moment, their wolves came to a sudden halt. The momentum threw me off and my body rolled down the forest floor.

The brothers all came together, their sharp teeth bared and they roared to the heavens as they couldn’t resist the full moon effects.

"Oh no..." I whispered. But something else was happening with me. My eyes snapped to my hands, as a sharp knot twisted in my chest and I broke out in cold sweat.

My claws lengthened and when I looked up at the sky again, all I saw was red.
