After Lin Zehan left, Mr. Lin leaned back in his chair, lost in thought. He recalled a beautiful woman appearing at their home when he was around twenty. His father had treated her with great respect.
He never knew the exact connection between the Lin family and that woman. He had lived with his mother since childhood, only seeing his father once a year. Then, one day, his father returned and never left again. He started several businesses, all of which did well.
He knew nothing else. Now that his father was gone, he no longer wished to know. In his opinion, since his child had been born and raised for someone else, any great debt of gratitude had been repaid.
...
Ye Wan was unaware of what had happened in the Lin family. Shen Ziche called her, and she answered, "Is something wrong?"
"Sister, do you still need me to tell you stories?" Shen Ziche had been reading many stories lately and was willing to tell her any of them if she wished.
Ye Wan frowned, "No, you just focus on your studies. Strive to get into a university in the capital; it will be more convenient for you to take care of your mother."
"Okay, I will," Shen Ziche said, hanging up the phone. He felt very dejected, but after three seconds of gloom, he immediately picked up his books and began to study diligently.
Shen Ziche knew clearly that this was his rare, and perhaps only, chance to change his life. He absolutely would not let himself fail.
Some things Ye Wan didn't know. When he went back to register his household registration, he encountered obstruction from his father's relatives. They wanted to delay him or to come to the capital with him to "enjoy life."
It was only later, after Mr. Lin's assistant employed certain means, that his household registration was smoothly transferred.
Shen Ziche once again witnessed the power of influence. A person could only obtain what they desired and accomplish what they intended if they had money and power!
As for him, a nobody from the countryside, he had nothing except a decent face. He could only rely on his own struggle to rise.
"Shen Ziche, I collected three love letters for you!" a roommate walked in, placing several colorful envelopes on the table with a teasing grin.
"Shen Ziche, honestly, since you arrived, our school's 'campus heartthrob' position is no longer secure. I heard the current heartthrob is quite unhappy with you. You should be careful," another roommate reminded him kindly as he emerged from the restroom after washing up.
"I'm not interested in any of that. I just want to study hard and get into Capital University," Shen Ziche knew Ye Wan was a student there. If he could also get into Capital University, they could attend the same school.
"Capital... Capital University? You sure dare to dream. No more than twenty people from our school manage to get in."
Shen Ziche frowned upon hearing this and asked, "Is it difficult? Isn't it said that having household registration makes it easier to get in?"
"It's only relatively easier. But I heard your grades are good. Tomorrow is the first mock exam after the New Year. Let's see if you can get into the top twenty. If you do, you'll likely get in."
Shen Ziche was determined to get into Capital University. He studied even more diligently during the following period. However, when the scores for the first mock exam after the New Year were released, Shen Ziche was somewhat bewildered. His score ranked within the top fifty in his grade.
If the admission ratio was considered, he wouldn't be able to get into Capital University. He felt a pang of panic. He had to get into Capital University so he could see his sister Ye Wan more often.
He would have to work even harder from now on. He decided he didn't want to live in the dormitory anymore. When the lights went out at night in the dorm, he wouldn't be able to study.
Shen Ziche decided to stop living in the dormitory. He would return to the hospital after school and study in the hospital corridor. Although the lights there were dim, it was better than not being able to continue studying.
