Chapter 4 No Escape

The person sitting inside the room hadn't anticipated the sudden turn of events outside. They simply froze for a moment before I yanked open the door and dragged them out.

By the time I got outside, the station was in complete chaos. I deliberately squeezed into the crowd, positioning myself where the sun shone, hoping to make my way out.

The security guard who had been blocking me in the office was now standing in the shadows by the door, a chilling smile playing on his lips as his hands hung loosely at his sides.

I couldn't risk going near the door, so I stayed put, buried in the throng, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

When the ambulance finally came, the paramedics initially refused to let me board. I immediately threw myself onto the body and wailed, and the compassionate nurse relented and allowed me on.

As I struggled to climb into the ambulance, I heard a cold laugh beside my ear: "You think I can't go back into that dead body in a little while?"

I didn't have time to think. I scrambled onto the vehicle and took the seat beside the door.

Once the ambulance was moving, I glanced back at the entrance. The guard was still standing in the same spot, but he had turned slightly, revealing one eye from the side of the door, pointing towards the ambulance.

He was pointing at the dead body inside!

Only then did I take a closer look at the corpse. The facial features had changed. It wasn't my father, but someone from the village. I couldn't remember who.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief. My father was alive and would come to save me. All I had to do was hold out until he arrived.

Sitting in the ambulance, I kept alternating between the corpse and the nurse beside me. If that thing wanted to get in, it would have to emerge from one of them.

As I was scrutinizing their faces, the ambulance suddenly sped up. I glanced out the window and my heart lurched.

Although I hadn't been to town often, I had an exceptional sense of direction. The ambulance was going the wrong way. It was heading towards the tunnel entrance!

Once inside the tunnel, the darkness would envelop the ambulance. Who knew if the dead man would sit up?

The two orderlies in the ambulance turned simultaneously, their faces fixed in cold smiles as they stared at me.

Without another thought, I yanked open the door and jumped out of the moving ambulance.

I tumbled several times on the road before finally coming to a stop. A car screeched to a halt, nearly running me over.

Clutching the hood of the car, I struggled to my feet and hobbled towards the side of the road, ignoring the driver's curses.

By now, the sun was beginning to set. Even if I ran along the main road, I wouldn't last long. Once night fell, my pursuer would have no more reservations. No matter where I ran, he would catch me.

I didn't know where to run or what to do.

After much thought, I was left with only my father's instructions. I had failed to carry them out yesterday. Would doing them again today save me?

I had already been dragged into town. Running back to the shopping mall was out of the question. Even if I made it, the outcome would be the same as yesterday.

Gritting my teeth, I turned into a nearby funeral supply shop. "Boss, I need a set of funeral clothes."

The owner of the funeral shop was about to close up when a blood-soaked child rushed in, grabbing the shop's funeral clothes and measuring them against himself. He was so frightened that he nearly fell to the ground.

I ignored his reaction, grabbed a set of funeral clothes that seemed about right, stripped off my own clothes right there in the shop, put on the funeral garments, threw the money on the table, and ran.

By the time I emerged from the funeral shop, it was almost dark. I was still quite a distance from the hotel.

I tried to flag down cars while wearing the funeral clothes, but no one dared to stop. Unable to run any further, I plunged into a small earth god shrine not far from the road.

My father had told me: Hide inside, close all the doors and windows, and don't come out no matter who calls. The earth god shrine at least had a door. I could only try to see if I could survive in the shrine.

Northeast earth god shrines, unlike those elsewhere, were considered large if they could accommodate a person. I moved the offering table to barricade the door and sat down, pressed against the table.

Before long, darkness fell outside. A red dot appeared on the cracked wall of the shrine, looking like someone was crouching outside, peering in through the crack with one eye.

I sat up straight. The person outside chuckled and said, "You think hiding in a shrine will keep me away?"

"Let me tell you, shrines are not ordinary places. Shrines without gods are only fit for ghosts. When the ghosts of the shrine return, you'll die even faster!"

I shivered. I had long heard stories about ghosts inhabiting shrines. When I first entered, I noticed there was no spirit tablet on the offering table. It was an empty shrine.

The ghosts wouldn't come out as soon as it got dark, but what if after a while...

Some things are better left unthought. The more you think, the more afraid you become. I was fine before, but now I felt a chill down my spine, as if someone were squatting on the offering table, watching me.

The person outside continued, "In a little while, the wind will pick up, and you'll understand. When the sky blows wind, it's a breeze. When ghosts blow wind, it's a gust. Pay attention and see if anything is blowing wind beside you."
