Chapter 1010: Chapter 1009: Mother and Daughter (Part 1)
The night was deep.
Katie did not go home but stayed with Walnut and Kurumi. Although she was tempted by Walnut’s invitation to become a mercenary, Katie was still somewhat hesitant. And it was precisely because of this hesitation that she did not immediately return to the Holy Silver Merchant Association.
But Katie was still very sad at the moment.
From childhood to adulthood, she had never succeeded in anything. It wasn’t that Katie didn’t work hard, nor that she wasn’t smart; she just had bad luck. Katie once spent a long time researching many materials and books to write a report that the teacher required, but unexpectedly, the day after she submitted the report, there was a sudden downpour, and the teacher’s window was left open. As a result, her report was soaked by the rain, and by the time the teacher arrived at school the next day, Katie’s report was so blurred that even her name couldn’t be read clearly.
As a child, Katie, like other noble young ladies, learned various skills such as painting, dancing, and even music. She worked hard on each of them, but problems always arose in the end.
Her graduation painting was torn to pieces by a stray dog, she accidentally sprained her ankle during her final dance performance, and she broke a string while playing the violin...
For Katie, these mishaps were routine.
Sometimes, even when eating, unexpected accidents would occur due to various reasons. For example, a stray cat might suddenly jump out and frighten her, causing her to knock over her plate, or her stomach might suddenly feel unwell...
She had been like this since childhood, and it was because of this that Katie had long been accustomed to her unlucky life.
She even thought that her father disliked her because she was so unlucky.
But Katie was not willing to give up so easily. She had only succeeded twice in her life: once in a previous professional qualification examination, which was the first time she felt the joy of successfully completing something since she was born, and the other was this time running a business.
This wasn’t the first time her father asked her to run a business, but every time before, Katie failed. And this time... she succeeded.
However, just when Katie thought her father would be happy about her success, she did not expect her father to be so angry.
Katie didn’t know why her father was unhappy, but she felt very wronged. After all, Katie was only a thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl. Of course, in the Main World, fifteen was considered adulthood, allowing one to work outside, but a person’s mind wouldn’t change because of that, let alone Katie’s experiences made it impossible for her to remain strong.
If one were unmoved by such things, they would be a heartless robot.
But fortunately, Walnut and Kurumi were there to support her.
Although Katie hadn’t known Walnut and the others for long, to be honest, the accidents they’d encountered together were more than many teams experienced in a lifetime. In such a scenario, people in Hollywood movies might end up rolling into bed together by the end.
In fact, Katie was indeed sleeping in the same bed with Walnut now.
Walnut did not seem to take today’s events to heart. After comforting Katie for a while, she fell asleep first. Katie, however, lay on the other side, unable to sleep.
The scene where her father kicked her out of the association today was too big a blow for Katie. If she had failed and her father threw her out in anger, it would be understandable. But what puzzled Katie was, even though she finally succeeded, why was her father so angry that he wanted to kick her out of the association?
Should I not have been born? Maybe it would be better if I didn’t exist in this world?
If it weren’t for Walnut and Kurumi being by her side, Katie might have broken down long ago.
Thinking of this, Katie’s eyes reddened again. She hurriedly closed her eyes, forcing herself not to think about these things.
However, at this moment, Katie suddenly felt an eerie chill appear abruptly.
What is that?
Katie opened her eyes suddenly and looked in the direction from which the chill emanated. Then, her eyes widened in surprise.
In the air in front of Katie, a bizarre figure was faintly visible, with pitch-black eyes and a mouth open in silent lament.
Is it an Undead?!
Seeing the Undead suddenly appear in front of her, Katie was taken aback. She had never seen an Undead, and generally, they only appeared in uninhabited places. But why was there an Undead here?
"Ugh...!"
Looking at the Undead, Katie instinctively wanted to scream, but she couldn’t make a sound when she opened her mouth. Moreover, when the Undead appeared, Katie found her body frozen from the inside out, unable to move.
"No... don’t..."
Katie bit her teeth, desperately trying to struggle, but her body felt like it didn’t belong to her anymore. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t move. She could only watch as the Undead slowly approached her, extending its arms to embrace her.
The biting cold swept over her, making Katie feel as if her soul was gradually freezing, her consciousness slowly becoming fuzzy. The pitch-black shadow of death began to envelop the girl’s body.
Am I going to die like this?
Thinking of this, Katie found it a bit funny. After all, this had always been her fate, hadn’t it? Otherwise, why would the Undead come to kill her just when she decided to accept Sister Walnut’s invitation to become a mercenary?
Just die like this; living is too tiring, after all. In any case, she’s been plagued by bad luck all her life, affecting others too. Perhaps it would be better if people like her died earlier.
Thinking of this, Katie gave up struggling and slowly closed her eyes.
But for some reason, at this moment, Katie suddenly thought of someone, someone she had never met. She gently opened her mouth and called out softly.
"Mom..."
However, just at this moment, the dark shadow that tightly embraced Katie suddenly hesitated, and at the same time, Katie’s body, controlled by the Undead, regained freedom and fell heavily.
"What’s wrong? What happened?"
Hearing the sound beside her, Walnut hurriedly opened her eyes. Seeing Katie and the Undead not far away, she was also taken aback.
"Where did the Undead come from?! Get away from here!"
With a roar, Walnut grabbed the shovel beside her and swung it at the floating Undead in the air.
By the way, Walnut usually sleeps with a shovel.
If it were an ordinary shovel, it certainly couldn’t harm the Undead. But Walnut’s shovel was no ordinary shovel. It had not only been scientifically enhanced by Nymph but also unscientifically enhanced by Fang Zheng. Especially for creatures like Undead, which ordinary weapons couldn’t harm and were frequently encountered by mercenaries, Fang Zheng certainly considered it.
Of course, Fang Zheng wouldn’t crazily enchant Walnut’s shovel with a Solar Flame Burst, but enchanting it with an elemental strike was no problem.
Walnut’s shovel crashed down from the air, hitting the body of the Undead, and in the next moment, the seemingly simple shovel exploded with colorful magic aura. Hurt by the magic, the Undead screamed and hurriedly retreated.
However, by this time, Kurumi had unknowingly blocked the Undead’s path from behind.
"Chronos, Seventh Bullet!"
"Bang!"
The magic bullet infused with temporal magic shot out, hitting the Undead’s body. In the next moment, the Undead’s movements halted instantly, and Walnut seized the opportunity to strike the Undead’s chest with her shovel.
"--------!!"
A deafening scream erupted, causing everyone to retreat involuntarily, and the entire room was shrouded in yin energy and dark fog for a moment.
Then, a translucent figure appeared in front of the three.
It was a woman who looked to be in her twenties, resembling Katie by seven or eight parts. Or rather, she looked just like how Katie would appear when she grew up. The woman raised her head, with a painful expression, reaching out to Katie.
"Child... my child..."
"Huh?"
Everyone was stunned by the woman’s call.
