Chapter 216: A strange request

Chapter 216: A strange request

"Stark, did you finish that quest I told you about the other day?"

"Stark, you’re back already? Help me out with one of my quests."

"Stark, here’s the money I borrowed the other day. You really helped me out."

I was surrounded the moment that I walked into the Adventurer’s Guild.

It had been a week since I joined and I had already become the center of attention like this.

I hadn’t wanted to draw this much attention, but it was hard not to draw attention after everything that I had done. With the strength that I demonstrated, everyone saw me as a future A Ranker since I had been able to match a former A Ranker in a fight.

That was a large part of why they all wanted to get closer to me.

The more connections that one had, the safer they would be in the adventurer world.

It was even better if the other side was a high ranking adventurer like an A Rank Adventurer.

In short, there was nothing to lose from forming a connection with someone high up.

I also understood this, which was why I chose to become friends with all of these people.

Even if they weren’t high ranking adventurers, it would be good to have connections that I could use in the future.

The other reason they were so enthusiastic was because of how I acted.

I didn’t act like a doormat, but no one would deny someone that acted friendly towards them.

Since I approached everyone, they had no reason to reject me.

Once I finished talking to all of these adventurers, I went over to the mission board to see if there was anything good.

While I was doing this, the receptionist came out from behind the desk and said to me, "You really are serious about being an adventurer. You’re always coming and going on missions. But you should take some time to rest up as well."

I looked at her with a smile before saying, "I’m still new, so I want to get as much experience as possible. At the same time, I’m someone that came from the countryside, so it’s not as if I have that much money in the first place."

"You say that, but you’re lending money to people." The receptionist said with a snort before saying in a softer voice, "You should really take care of yourself more."

"Well, I’ll settle down once I’ve made enough money that I don’t need to worry about my living costs. After that, I’ll take the easy life as an adventurer."

She looked at me again with a concerned look, but she gave a nod to show that she understood before heading back behind the desk.

I gave a secret sigh when I saw this.

The reason that I was taking all of these missions was actually to have an excuse to go out and search this area.

This Adventurer’s Guild branch that I registered in was in a place far away from where any other avatar was. But this was a place that was a treasure trove based on my experience with the game.

I knew that even though this Adventurer’s Guild branch was remote, it was a place with plenty of natural resources.

Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a former A Rank Adventurer as a guild master.

During my time scouting, I had already found several different treasures.

It was just about finding the time to harvest them, but that would have to wait until I raised my rank.

While I was looking at the board, there was someone that suddenly walked over.

"Are you looking for a request?"

I looked at them with one brow raised when I heard this.

The one that had approached me was a chubby middle aged man.

With the way that he looked at me, there was a part of me that screamed stranger danger.

"Is he one of those people that are into...?"

That was all that I could think when I saw him looking at me like this.

"I’m not a strange person." He said when he saw the way that I looked at him, but all that did was make him seem even more suspicious.

Taking a deep breath, I asked, "What do you want with me?"

The middle aged man’s eyes lit up when he heard this before saying, "I was looking for a guard to protect me and my cargo. I was about to post a mission when I saw you looking for one and I thought that I could ask you directly."

No matter how he said this, this was a suspicious request.

So in the end, "Thank you for thinking of me, but I don’t think that I’m the right person for this. There’s plenty of others that are far more qualified for this request. It would be best if you went to them."

I said before turning around to leave.

The sooner that I moved away from this middle aged man, the better.

But he didn’t seem to want to let me leave as he followed behind me and said, "Of course I was planning on hiring others as well, but I felt that you were perfect since I’ve heard the rumours about you. I hope that you will be able to help me."

When he said this, it felt like there was something seeping into my mind.

"Mind control magic?" I thought to myself when I felt this.

Though he was trying to use this magic on me, it didn’t actually have an effect since my mental defenses from my shared stats were just too strong.

However, this person was clearly causing trouble in this Adventurer’s Guild branch...

If I let him cause this trouble, I would get caught up in this...

The best way to handle this was to take care of him myself.

"I’ll consider it when I see the request." I said in a voice that made it seem like I had fallen for his mind control magic.

The middle aged man just said with a smile, "Of course."

Then without hesitation, he headed off towards the receptionist counter.
