Chapter 39 The Luminous Mushroom

After two hours of fighting, they had fought their way from their doorstep all the way to the entrance of the residential complex.

Xu Yan's "first kill" was remarkably well done.

Xu An suddenly felt that all the previous mobilization with her mother had been a waste of breath.

Her mother simply had no clear understanding of herself. After all, the savage factor within her had to be inherited from somewhere, and clearly, that source was her mother.

Xu An felt it was enough and prepared to pull her mother home. However, as they passed a green belt, she suddenly felt an inexplicable pull.

Xu Yan saw her stop and whispered, "Nannan, are there still zombies? Don't be afraid, Mom will protect you!"

Xu An saw that her mother was clearly getting into it. The last time they played "Link Link," her mother had the same look, refusing to sleep until she cleared it.

Xu An shook her head, "It's probably not zombies. I just feel a strange sensation, a bit curious."

"Then shall we go take a look?"

Xu An thought for a moment and then agreed, but they both switched the long sabers in their hands to guns.

Compared to cold weapons, firearms were safer in unexpected situations.

What was called a green belt was actually just a patch of withered, cracked flowerbeds.

Xu An poked aside the withered branches with her shotgun and scanned the area, finding nothing different.

She took a few steps back, preparing to leave, but that strong sense of attraction struck again. This time, Xu An could clearly feel that the branch in her spatial dimension, which she had always been unable to fathom, was giving her a strong hint.

She suppressed this uncomfortable feeling, switched her shotgun to her long saber, and probed the tip of the blade into the cracked soil.

Even she didn't know what she was doing, and Xu Yan watched from the side, completely baffled.

"Nannan, why are you digging?"

Xu An's inner monologue was, "It's like I've been abducted by aliens; I don't even know what I'm doing."

"I have a feeling there's something buried underneath, I'm going to dig and see."

Only her mother would believe such a preposterous reason.

Xu Yan stood around, doing nothing, and asked Xu An to find two shovels from her spatial dimension.

Thus, the two of them, under the scorching sun, dug in the residential complex.

If anyone else saw them, they would probably "praise" the two for their leisurely activity.

Half an hour later, Xu An clearly felt her shovel hit something at the bottom. Just as she was about to give up.

The bare branch in her spatial dimension actually wriggled violently.

Xu An's eyes darkened. She pulled her mother behind her, and the shovel in her hand instantly transformed into a Tang saber.

She fiercely chopped down towards the commotion in the flowerbed.

"Pfft—"

It sounded like a balloon deflating.

Xu An, not feeling reassured, swung her saber a few more times until the commotion completely ceased.

When she finally saw what was in front of her, Xu An became even more bewildered. It was a "mushroom" emitting white light?

Calling it a mushroom was a bit inaccurate, as no mushroom would glow. Yet, this thing did indeed have a semicircular umbrella shape.

Xu Yan finally recovered from the sudden event and leaned forward curiously, asking, "What is this?"

Xu An's grip on the saber loosened slightly. She shook her head.

"I don't know either. I've never seen this thing before."

"But this thing was hidden deep enough."

If it weren't for the hint from the branch in her spatial dimension, this glowing mushroom might have escaped.

The white light from the mushroom seemed to flow as if it were alive, with specks of brilliance swirling within the light, resembling a flowing galaxy.

It was dazzling.

Xu An reached out to take it, but the mushroom seemed to have no physical form. As her fingertips touched it, the mushroom transformed into a beam of light and merged into her fingertip.

Following that, the branch in her spatial dimension contentedly stretched its only two leaves.

Those two leaves also visibly grew, from fingernail-sized to the size of an infant's palm in a short time.

Xu An was startled. She never knew that the branch could absorb the glowing mushroom.

So many things happening in this life were beyond her comprehension. This sense of unknown bewilderment made her feel a moment of panic.

She immediately released all her spiritual consciousness to check the supplies she had stockpiled in her spatial dimension.

She was afraid that this sudden change would affect her stored provisions.

Upon checking, however, Xu An was even more surprised. Not only were her stockpiled provisions unaffected, but the dense fog, which had been showing signs of receding, had now become much thinner.

It shouldn't be long before the entire spirit soil area was completely exposed.

This discovery delighted Xu An, and at the same time, made her even more curious about the branch.

But after looking for a long time, she couldn't figure anything out.

Seeing her daughter standing there, lost in thought, Xu Yan knew she must be checking her spatial dimension. She immediately picked up the Tang saber in Xu An's hand and guarded her.

Because they had stayed too long, quite a few zombies had been drawn by the scent and were coming back.

However, Xu Yan was no longer the same Xu Yan who had just stepped out.

"After three days, one should look at him with new eyes!"

A determined smile spread across her lips, as if she hadn't had enough of killing just now.

When she first started her business back then, she had killed plenty of piglets. That heroic spirit of a woman surged back into her heart.

Although she had lived a life of luxury for many years, her demeanor had become much gentler.

But she wasn't called the "butcher beauty" for nothing back then.

When Xu An withdrew her consciousness from the spatial dimension, she found that her mother had created a circle around her, killing zombies.

Xu Yan was like playing a real-life game of "Fruit Ninja," but instead of fruit, she was slicing zombie heads.

Zombie heads littered the ground around them, leaving Xu An speechless.

She suddenly found herself missing her gentle and demure mother from before.

Looking at Xu Yan, whose combat power had suddenly been unlocked, her only solace was that even if she wasn't around, her mother probably wouldn't die so easily.

She felt a bit helpless and stepped forward to tug at the blood-crazed Xu Yan.

"Mom, stop chopping, I'm hungry!"

"What did you say?!"

Xu Yan was too focused on chopping to hear properly.

"I said stop chopping! I'm hungry! Let's go home and cook!"

"Oh... Wait until I finish these last few, I'll be right there."

Xu An: "..."

It was just like when your mom tells you to do your homework, and you say you'll go after you finish this episode of the TV show.

Life is surprisingly similar.

After Xu Yan finished off the last zombie, she finally put down the saber she was wielding.

The two of them walked towards their home.

Halfway there, Xu Yan only then belatedly remembered that their mother-daughter duo's actions might be a bit too ostentatious.

Whether it was ostentatious or not, their actions today had indeed been noticed.

Fang Chang, holding Ji Rou Rou in his arms, looked in the direction where the two women had left in the distance, gritted his teeth, and said fiercely.

"That's right, those two women are residents of 1-1003! Damn it! Those bitches!"

A surge of anger rushed to the top of his head. The fact that the residents of 1-1003 were still alive made him exceptionally furious.

Ji Rou Rou, with her soft and delicate body, snuggled up to him knowingly, her eyes also flashing with malice.

"How detestable! Their family clearly had people inside. Why didn't they open the door when we knocked back then, causing us to lose so many companions!"
