The Silence of the Lambs is not a simple crime suspense film.
It intensifies the horror atmosphere, its characters are extremely complex, and even carries some psychoanalytic undertones.
Of course, it also represents a significant breakthrough in narrative.
This film eschews the traditional singular struggle between detective and criminal, instead introducing a design of using a demon to catch a demon, imbuing the film with tremendous dramatic tension.
After handling domestic affairs, Su Han immediately flew overseas to film his scenes.
As his role was not particularly extensive, he had specifically arranged a time with the director for his shooting.
His aim was to complete his segments within one or two days.
The actress collaborating with Su Han was Jodie.
Jodie was truly beautiful in her youth.
Upon arriving at the set, Su Han greeted Jodie and the relevant cast and crew members. After a brief period of familiarization, Su Han focused on rehearsing with Jodie.
The scene they were about to shoot involved Jodie visiting Su Han at the mental institution, followed by a profoundly significant dialogue between them.
Su Han portrayed Hannibal, a deranged serial killer whose specialty was cannibalism.
Jodie was to visit this psychopathic killer.
This is precisely the essence of the film.
To catch one psychopath, you must seek help from another.
Thus, the following scene between Su Han and Jodie unfolded.
"Action!"
"All departments, ready!"
As the director called out, all the crew members gave him an "ok" gesture.
Jodie arrived at the psychiatric hospital, where the inmates were all intensely mad.
Upon seeing Jodie, they became like unbridled wild horses, grabbing at the bars and frenziedly trying to break free.
The director's camera followed her footsteps.
Finally, she reached the door of Su Han's cell.
At this moment, the camera focused on Su Han.
Su Han, as he appeared, presented a stark contrast to the description of a psychopathic killer.
It was utterly impossible to associate him with such a criminal.
He appeared elegant, refined, and confident.
This was because the Hannibal Doctor portrayed by Su Han was a well-educated psychiatric expert.
He possessed profound knowledge, a distinguished demeanor, and high intelligence.
Therefore, to embody the essence of Hannibal, one could not act like one would for an ordinary serial killer.
At times, the more outwardly normal a person appears, the more perverse and demonic they truly are.
"Good morning."
Su Han gazed at Jodie with a cheerful smile.
Jodie: "I'm Clarice. May I talk with you?"
Su Han: "You're one of Jack's subordinates, aren't you?"
"Yes, sir."
Su Han remained still, unmoved.
He seemed entirely unfettered by the other person's identity.
"May I see your identification?"
"Certainly."
Jodie visibly shifted, taking out her ID and opening it for him to see.
Su Han stared intently, a faint smile playing on his lips. This smile was somewhat unnerving.
"Come closer."
Jodie extended the ID slightly.
"A little closer."
Jodie stepped forward with the ID, and Su Han also advanced, his face emerging from the darkness into the light.
Now, his entire face was illuminated.
He glanced at Jodie's shoes, then looked up at her: "It expires in a week."
"You're not a real FBI agent, are you?"
Jodie: "I'm still in training."
Su Han: "Jack sent a trainee to see me?"
"Yes, I'm a student. Jack sent me to learn. You can judge for yourself if I'm qualified to do this."
Su Han's eyes remained fixed on her, a smile present throughout.
Ordinarily, very few people could overpower Jodie's temperament overseas.
However, in Su Han's presence, he completely dominated her.
Su Han, with a smile, already exuded the aura of an ancient monster, a seasoned pervert.
"You're quite cunning."
"Please, have a seat."
His tone was almost commanding. The moment he spoke, Jodie had no choice but to obediently sit on the nearby stool.
After sitting, Su Han gazed at her intently.
"Tell me, what did Miggs say to you?"
His gaze was one of scrutiny, the kind that would send shivers down one's spine and instill fear in most people.
"Miggs, the 'many-faced man' in the next cell. He spoke to you. What did he say?"
******
"So, I can't smell it."
He then looked up, took a deep breath, with an expression of enjoyment.
"You use Avon skincare."
"You sometimes wear Light Blue perfume."
Having been seen through, Jodie sat rigidly, her previous arrogance replaced by a palpable discomfort.
Su Han's eyes suddenly lit up, fixing on her: "But not today!"
As this scene was being filmed, the crew members collectively gasped, stunned by the intensity Su Han brought to the role.
They exchanged hushed whispers.
"I'd heard about how good Su Han was, and I thought it was just rumors. I never expected him to nail it on the first take, and his portrayal really feels like a madman. It gives me the creeps."
"I'm quite unnerved right now, he seems so twisted!"
"It makes my skin crawl. I'm genuinely scared."
"I was already a big fan of his Joker, but this performance is truly captivating."
Jodie changed the subject: "Did you paint these?"
Su Han reacted, turning to look beside him.
"That's the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore as seen from the Loggia dei Lanzi."
"You only brought Florence?"
"Are all those details from memory?"
Su Han gazed at Jodie: "Agent Starling, I only have memories, no sights."
"Then could you share your insights on this questionnaire?"
Su Han continued to stare at Jodie, as if piercing through her.
His gaze now looked terrifying, as if he had transformed into someone else.
Jodie became increasingly uncomfortable under his stare, intensely so.
She attempted various methods to divert his attention, to make him stop looking at her.
"You're very polite. Perhaps you could be polite to me."
"You candidly recounted Miggs's embarrassing remarks, established trust, and now you've abruptly changed topic to this questionnaire. Tsk, tsk, this won't do."
Having been called out, Jodie felt displeased: "I'm merely asking you to take a look, Doctor. Whether you look or not is up to you."
"Jack must be very busy to ask a student for help in catching that new Buffalo Bill."
"He's quite the bad boy."
"Do you know why he's called Buffalo Bill?"
"Please tell me. The newspapers won't say."
Jodie: "It was a joke from a homicide detective in Kansas City."
"They say this man likes to flay his victims."
Su Han's gaze remained fixed on her: "Why do you think he skins them?"
"Because it excites him. Most serial killers take souvenirs from their victims."
Su Han's eyes did not blink; he was resolute: "I don't."
"Yes, but you ate them."
Su Han: "Bring it here."
Jodie handed him the files.
After reviewing the files, Su Han: "Do you believe these clumsy attempts can dissect me?"
Jodie: "No, I believe your knowledge..."
"You're quite ambitious, aren't you?"
Su Han stared at Jodie: "Do you know how I see you?"
"You carry a designer handbag with cheap shoes. Like a country bumpkin."
"A clean, busy, somewhat tasteful country bumpkin."
His words struck a chord with Jodie.
"Even though you grew up with everything, you're still the descendant of poor white people."
"Isn't that right, Agent Starling?"
"You try so hard to escape your accent, that pure West Virginia accent. Was your father a miner?"
"Did he smell of kerosene lamps?"
"Those boys were quick to get you, fumbling in the back of cars, while you dreamed of escape, of going anywhere."
"To join the FBI."
Su Han's pronouncements were all about Jodie, stirring up unpleasant childhood memories for her.
She smiled: "You have a great deal of insight, Doctor."
"But do you dare to use this profound insight to examine yourself?"
"Why don't you analyze yourself, write down your observations?"
"Perhaps you're afraid to do so."
Su Han continued to gaze at Jodie, then walked to the side, pulled something, the noise startling Jodie.
He approached Jodie, leaning against the window: "Once upon a time, a census taker wanted to study me. With fava beans and a nice Chianti, I ate his liver."
He said this without blinking.
Jodie was stunned on the spot, terrified by this scene.
Her pupils contracted.
"Fly back to school, little June bug!"
Su Han said, turning away: "Fly, fly."
This segment of his performance truly terrified many on set.
The crew members gasped, their skin crawling.
"This is too frightening. For a moment, I thought it was real, not a movie."
"I was genuinely scared. It felt like Su Han truly embodied the madness of Hannibal. Terrifying."
"I broke out in a cold sweat. During the filming, I didn't dare to move."
"Cut!"
The director called cut, beaming and applauding enthusiastically.
"Excellent!"
"Very good!"
"An outstanding performance, perfectly captured!"
Jodie, the actress opposite Su Han, trembled as she emerged from character.
"Are you alright?"
Su Han inquired.
Jodie recovered, a smile on her face: "I'm fine, but you genuinely scared me just now. It was too terrifying."
"It's alright, it's alright. It's all part of acting. That was fake me, this is real me. Don't be afraid."
Seeing Su Han joke like this, Jodie smiled.
"Honestly, I was really scared. My heart is still pounding."
"Your acting is truly superb. I'd only heard about it before, but acting opposite you today, it's incredible."
"You were great too!"
