At ten o’clock, Luo Fei and Wang Lei hurried over to Zeng Tianming’s house to find Wang Wenying.
Zeng Tianming was not very fond of children, Wang Wenying, as his wife, should know.
When they saw Wang Wenying, her face looked even more haggard, as if in just a few short days, this once charming woman had completely lost her luster and aged several years.
In the room, besides Wang Wenying, there was a forty-year-old woman who resembled Wang Wenying both in figure and demeanor. She was Wang Wenying’s sister, who had returned from the city upon hearing her sister was in trouble.
"Officers, please sit down. Sis, pour the officers some water," Wang Wenying said weakly, lying on the sofa.
"No need, no need, we’re just here to gather some information. We’ll leave once we’re done," Luo Fei shook his head, refusing politely.
Wang Wenying didn’t insist and huskily asked, "Officers, ask whatever you need to."
Seeing this, Luo Fei asked, "Mrs. Wang, we suspect your husband Mr. Zeng may be connected to your son’s death. Could you tell us how your husband treated your child when he was alive?"
Wang Wenying shook her head, "Tianming’s attitude towards the child was always unpredictable. Sometimes he was great with the child, but sometimes he would inexplicably get angry, so usually Xiaoguang wasn’t very close to him."
"Do you know why? We’ve learned that Mr. Zeng used to care a lot about Mrs. Wang, so it seems he should have been fond of your child as well," Luo Fei continued.
Wang Wenying hesitated for a moment and said, "Perhaps because of that incident."
After speaking, Wang Wenying fell silent, seemingly unwilling to recall it.
"What incident? Mrs. Wang, could you give us more details?" Luo Fei asked kindly.
After a while, Wang Wenying finally spoke up.
"Before I was with Tianming, I had a deep and unforgettable romance. He was my first love, his name was Kang Jian. I, Kang Jian, and Tianming were high school classmates. Kang Jian and I started dating in high school. Tianming confessed his feelings for me back then, but my heart was with Kang Jian, so I turned down Tianming."
"Kang Jian excelled in academics and got into Jinling University after graduation. Tianming and I weren’t as good and ended up at Jiangbei University. Thus, Kang Jian went to college out of the province, and we started a long-distance relationship. Despite the distance, our relationship was strong and steady, and I always imagined marrying Kang Jian one day."
"During college, Tianming persisted in pursuing me, but my heart always belonged to Kang Jian. I only saw Tianming as a good friend, never considering otherwise. Yet one day, everything changed. That day’s lunch made me nauseous. I felt queasy all day and couldn’t eat. Initially, I didn’t pay it much mind until a roommate jokingly said I might be pregnant."
"That’s when it hit me—I hadn’t had my period this month, and last month Kang Jian and I had met and been intimate. Panicked, I messaged Kang Jian immediately."
"Kang Jian took a long time to respond, suggesting I buy a pregnancy test first to confirm. I purchased one from the infirmary and secretly tested it. It showed two lines, positive—I was pregnant."
"Upon confirming, I immediately informed Kang Jian. He didn’t reply for a long time, leaving me staring at my phone in the restroom. I hoped he’d say, ’Don’t worry, Yingzi; we can marry now that we’re having a child,’ because Kang Jian was the only one I wanted to marry."
"But I was shocked when Kang Jian’s reply instructed me to abort the child because he had received a foreign university admission notice and didn’t want to miss the opportunity."
"After hearing this, my heart shattered. He was always so gentle and caring; I never imagined he’d be so resolute. We both fell silent for a long time before I painfully suggested breaking up. Kang Jian agreed, and at that moment, it felt as if I was dying. I hung up, opened my mouth wide to cry, but couldn’t shed any tears."
"That night, I laid in bed, tears uncontrollably streaming. I reminisced over my days with Kang Jian repeatedly. The next morning, Kang Jian transferred me ten thousand yuan without a word, but I knew it was for the abortion."
"After days lying in bed, I felt slightly better, having thought a lot. I decided to keep the child—it was a life, my child, and I couldn’t bear to abort it."
"That day, I sought out Tianming, asking if he still liked me. He was thrilled and said yes. Then I asked, ’I am pregnant; will you marry me?’ Tianming hesitated for a moment before nodding decisively, and that’s how we got together. Soon after, I discovered something amiss; my period arrived, proving I wasn’t pregnant at all. At that moment, I wanted to cry. Upon telling Tianming, he was delighted."
"Shortly after graduation, we married. I came to terms with it—with someone who adored me, marriage didn’t seem bad."
"Soon after marriage, I truly became pregnant. Xiaoguang was premature—he came out after seven months. Initially, everything seemed to be heading in a good direction, but as Xiaoguang grew, everything changed."
"Xiaoguang looked too much like Kang Jian, especially his eyes. It felt like a cruel joke from fate. Tianming’s attitude shifted, especially after that class reunion. Kang Jian attended after a long absence, and several old classmates mistakened Xiaoguang for Kang Jian’s child. I noticed Tianming’s face at that moment—unpleasant."
"Afterward, Tianming completely changed. He frequented bars for no reason, often inexplicably lashing out at me and the child. I knew his transformation was due to me, so I kept accommodating him. I never imagined he’d end up like this."
Speaking of this, Wang Wenying couldn’t help but cry.
"Don’t cry, don’t cry, it’ll all pass," Wang Wenying’s sister comforted her, holding her close.
Regarding Wang Wenying’s situation, Luo Fei didn’t know what to say. It seemed life played its hand—if Wang Wenying hadn’t feigned pregnancy, she might not have broken up with Kang Jian, not gotten with Zeng Tianming, and avoided this tragedy.
Yet life doesn’t allow for ’ifs’; the tragedy occurred and that’s that.
