Chapter 425 Survivors Within the City

Lu Heng frowned upon hearing the golden eagle's report.

This city was once teeming with zombies and devoid of human activity; he couldn't understand what the golden eagle had discovered.

The golden eagle's explanation wasn't very clear, only stating that as it flew near a house, it seemed to have smelled the aroma of food.

"Are you sure it was the smell of food?" Lu Heng was somewhat doubtful, wondering if the golden eagle was hungry.

However, if it were hungry, it should have thought of raw meat, not the smell of human food.

"Let's go and see."

Lu Heng no longer chose to walk. He recalled the rhinoceros beast and flew directly over.

As for the other animals on the ground, Lu Heng only brought Lu Bai, while the rest were instructed to head in that direction themselves.

Before long, Lu Heng arrived at the location the golden eagle had mentioned.

Indeed, the faint scent of food still lingered in the air.

But this wasn't the smell of stewed meat; it was more like stir-fried vegetables.

Animals' senses of smell are often more acute than humans'. With their help, Lu Heng quickly pinpointed the source of the aroma.

It was a five-story building, but the exterior of the building was covered with thick sheets of iron.

This was man-made, constructed in the early days of the apocalypse.

Lu Heng approached the exterior of the building and carefully examined the sealed iron sheets.

The iron plates were the kind used for construction site barriers before the apocalypse. This house had three layers of them nailed to the outside.

These iron plates were used to seal the doors and windows of the building, meaning the doors and windows inside should not have been damaged.

Therefore, the aroma of food wasn't strong, nor was it emanating from the lower floors.

Lu Heng looked around the building. This was a standalone house, with other houses quite a distance away.

The location was well-chosen, and it had been further reinforced to be very sturdy. Thus, the people inside had managed to survive in the zombie-infested city until now.

What talent!

Never mind when these iron plates were installed.

This person must have also stored a significant amount of supplies inside, otherwise, they wouldn't have lasted this long.

Lu Heng stood at the base of the building, carefully sensing the thoughts of the people inside.

With his telepathy, he could get a basic understanding of the situation inside without entering.

"The zombies outside have been quite restless these past few days. I heard it was quite chaotic outside.

But it's much quieter now. Should I let Ah Cai go to the rooftop to check the situation?"

"Never mind, let's wait a bit longer. What if it attracts the attention of the zombies? There are also a few high-level zombies in the city, quite cunning.

Alas, I've been eating boiled vegetables every day for the past few days. Today, since it's quiet outside, I'll stir-fry some vegetables..."

After standing for a long time, Lu Heng only heard one person's thoughts.

However, judging by this person's thoughts, there should be at least two people in the building.

"You wait for me outside. I'll go inside to take a look."

Lu Heng conveyed his thoughts to Lu Bai beside him. There were no zombies here, so there shouldn't be any danger.

Lu Heng took a breath and leaped, clinging to the outer wall of the building. He climbed upwards along the exterior wall, searching for any possible entrance.

The survivors here might not go out, but they would definitely have an exit. At the very least, ventilation openings must have been left.

However, Lu Heng found no breakthrough on the outer wall until he reached the rooftop.

There was a small room on the rooftop, a safe passage leading to the roof.

Lu Heng tried to pull it, but the door was locked from the inside.

Lu Heng controlled his metal ability and quickly melted the iron door, creating an opening that he could pass through.

His body then slipped inside.

There were some sounds from inside, but they were likely deliberately lowered and not very loud.

Lu Heng descended from the rooftop and soon reached the fifth floor.

There were people here; Lu Heng could sense the breathing of humans inside.

Some were probably sleeping.

Lu Heng slowed his pace, searching room by room.

The windows were completely sealed with iron plates, so no sunlight could penetrate inside.

And after so long in the apocalypse, the city's power supply had long been cut off, so it was very dark inside the building.

Fortunately, Lu Heng had night vision and could clearly see the surrounding objects.

This was an office building. The rooms inside were large, and some abandoned office furniture remained in its original positions.

However, there were scattered papers on the ground, and Lu Heng's footsteps inevitably made some noise.

"Who? Su Na, is that you? Why aren't you making a sound?"

A man's voice came from a room inside. He had likely heard the noise Lu Heng made.

Receiving no response, rustling sounds immediately came from inside.

Soon, a sturdy male figure appeared in the hallway, holding a long, stick-like object.

Seeing this, Lu Heng stopped, standing on this side of the corridor, facing the man in a standoff.

"Who? Who's there?"

The man likely didn't have Lu Heng's excellent eyesight. He couldn't see Lu Heng's figure clearly but probably sensed danger.

Lu Heng's lips curved slightly, and he finally spoke.

"I didn't expect there to be survivors here."

His teasing tone eased the tense atmosphere.

"Who are you? How did you get in?"

The man was also very surprised. The city outside was full of zombies.

And how did this person get in?

"I'm human too. You don't need to be nervous, and I have no ill intentions."

"Then why didn't you speak earlier? Are you alone?"

"Yes, and one is outside."

Lu Heng thought for a moment. Lu Bai might show up later, so it was best to count Lu Bai as one.

"Outside? There are zombies outside, he..."

"You haven't gone out to check today, have you? There are no zombies outside. When I came over just now, the entire city was filled with zombie corpses."

"What? Corpses? Impossible."

The man clearly didn't believe what Lu Heng said, his tone full of doubt.

"You'll know if you go and see. By the way, how many survivors are there here?"

"What do you want? What is your purpose for coming here?"

The man stood still, but Lu Heng could feel that the man seemed to have relaxed a bit.

Was it because he heard there were only two people on his side?

"Just curious to take a look. However, it's pitch black here. Are we just going to keep talking in the dark like this?"

Lu Heng didn't mind, but he disliked this way of chatting, especially since he hated standing in dark places.

"Ah Cai? Why do I hear other people's voices?"

Just as Lu Heng was about to make the place brighter, a woman's voice came from downstairs.

The building was somewhat hollow, and even though the woman's voice was not loud, it reached Lu Heng's ears clearly.

Hearing no reply, the woman spoke again, "Ah Cai, what's wrong?"

"There's someone. Don't come up. Stay down there and don't make a sound."

The man, fearing Lu Heng had lied, quickly warned her, afraid someone would follow the sound to find the woman.
