"I didn't mean it that way," Wu Xuerou explained indistinctly. "I just felt this jade bracelet should be yours."
With the speakerphone on, the phone was placed on the table. Zhao Yanxia gestured for the maid to pour water, replying proudly, "What are you saying? I'm not the lady of the house anymore, how can I compete with her?"
"Tch, she was just lucky. The Ming Jue was supposed to wake up, and she married into the Di family. Then she was coincidentally lucky enough to encounter Qianqian being kidnapped. I think she rushed forward at that time just to gain the old madam's favor." As she spoke, Wu Xuerou's fingernails dug into her flesh.
She never expected that Jiang Ziyu, who seemed simple, would be even more formidable than Zhao Yanxia in her actions.
Zhao Yanxia, flattered by Wu Xuerou's words, retorted playfully, "Alright, be careful what you say. Don't let someone overhear and think I'm envious of the new Mrs. Jiang Ziyu. Don't worry, since the old madam gave her the item, she'll have to have the lifespan to wear it."
With a hidden meaning, Wu Xuerou's eyes lit up. She retorted into the phone, "If this bracelet were to break, would the old madam be angry?"
"What do you think?" Zhao Yanxia replied with a question.
After the call ended, Wu Xuerou thought carefully in her room. Then, she went down to the kitchen.
The maid was preparing dinner. Wu Xuerou went to the cupboard and lifted the lid off the gas stove.
"Second Madam, this is for the lady of the house," the maid reminded her.
Her downward gaze turned somber. Wu Xuerou unhappily put down the lid, "Go prepare a fruit platter."
The maid dared not resist. Forgetting to properly cover the pot, she turned to wash and cut the fruit.
Soon, the fruit platter was brought before Wu Xuerou. Before the maid could speak, Wu Xuerou snatched it away forcefully.
Her hand was scratched. The maid looked at her retreating back with grievance.
Knock, knock!
With the sound of knocking, Wu Xuerou's gentle voice emerged from inside.
"Come in."
Wu Xuerou heard the voice and pushed the door open.
This was her first time entering Di Mingjue and Jiang Ziyu's marital bedroom.
Living in the same Di residence, the decor styles were vastly different. Her own room was ordinary, not luxurious or opulent. The room before her exuded luxury and nobility from every corner.
Jiang Ziyu sat up from the bed and greeted her lazily, "Is something the matter?"
Her voice pulled back the distracted Wu Xuerou. She looked back at Jiang Ziyu and quickly handed her the fruit platter, "I heard that eating more fruit is good for wound healing. Seeing as there was fresh fruit in the kitchen, I brought some up for you."
The fruit platter was abundant with various kinds of fruit, and the air was filled with a fruity fragrance.
"Thank you for your trouble." Jiang Ziyu reached out and accepted it.
With her hands freed, Wu Xuerou, uninvited, brought a stool and sat down. She covered her mouth and smiled shyly, playfully feigning intimacy, "Don't mention it, we're sisters-in-law. It's natural for us to care for and support each other."
Sisters-in-law?
That seemed a bit premature.
Jiang Ziyu forced a smile.
Her lack of response brought the already awkward conversation to a halt. Wu Xuerou shifted uncomfortably, her eyes darting back and forth.
"Eat your fruit. It won't taste as good if it sits for too long," she waved her hand in the air.
As she had hoped, Jiang Ziyu politely picked up a fork from beside the fruit platter and took a small piece of apple into her mouth.
Wu Xuerou watched her eat the fruit with a smile, urging her to eat more throughout the process. If Wu Xuerou hadn't personally delivered the fruit and stayed with her the whole time, Jiang Ziyu would have been suspicious that the fruit was poisoned by her actions.
The large platter was almost emptied, with only a few strawberries remaining.
"Does sister-in-law not like strawberries?" Wu Xuerou asked curiously.
Jiang Ziyu nodded and placed the plate on the bedside table. "Thank you, I'm full. Next time, don't bother sending fruit platters to me. I'll come down and prepare them myself."
