Chapter 645: Chapter 346 The Increasingly Complicated Incident
Jane Quinlan was somewhat worried: "Has something really happened?"
"Evelyn Claire has been caught, but Wendy hasn’t been found."
"Ah? How could this be?" Jane Quinlan exclaimed in surprise: "Could it be that Evelyn Claire did something to Wendy..."
"Let’s not jump to conclusions before everything is settled.
The police and the people I’ve found are still searching. Anchester is only so big, we’ll find her eventually."
He said this as he rubbed her head: "Alright, weren’t you thinking of going to the police station with me to check it out? Go put on a coat."
Jane Quinlan nodded repeatedly, got up to grab her coat, draped it over herself, and went downstairs with Kay Forrest.
Arriving at the police station, the chief brought them to a separate room where Evelyn Claire was being held.
There was a look of dejection in her eyes.
As soon as she saw Kay Forrest and Jane Quinlan, she slightly raised her eyebrows and stood up to bow: "Director Forrest, Miss Quinlan."
Jane Quinlan pondered for a moment, wondering why she was behaving like this.
Kay moved forward: "What have you done to Wendy."
"The police have just asked me about Wendy, I don’t know, I really don’t know."
As she spoke, she closed her eyes and began to weep, sitting down on the chair: "Why does everyone have to make things difficult for me?"
"Do you dare to say Wendy didn’t come looking for you?"
"No, no, she did come to my house last night.
But then she left."
The police shouted: "We found a rope with bloodstains at your house, how dare you still argue."
"The rope is mine, but what does that have to do with Wendy.
When Wendy came to my house yesterday, that rope was already there."
"How do you explain the bloodstains on the rope," the police’s voice was soft but also forceful.
"That’s my blood, I accidentally cut my hand and it got on there," she said, placing her own fingers on the table.
"I’ve said it many times, because I’m a girl living alone, I get scared when I sleep at night.
I use a rope to tie several stools together every night to block the door when I sleep.
The day before yesterday I cut my hand, and accidentally got the blood on the rope while tying the stools."
Jane Quinlan turned her head to exchange a glance with Kay Forrest.
Kay asked: "Evelyn Claire, what’s with the photo on your wall."
Evelyn Claire looked at him biting her lip, "Director Forrest should have investigated it already.
I hated you and old Forrest because of my father’s issue.
But I wasn’t capable of much, so I could only take revenge on you guys in this way.
Even if it wouldn’t hurt you much, it made me feel a lot better in my heart."
"And what about the courier situation?" the hitherto silent Jane Quinlan couldn’t hold back any longer.
"Don’t tell me you don’t know about the courier."
"Of course I know, Wendy came to my house just yesterday to ask me about the courier."
"Then tell me, do you have anything to do with the courier issue at all," Jane Quinlan looked at her: "You’d better not lie."
"It has nothing to do with me."
Kay whispered something in the ear of the police, who then stepped forward and said: "Show us your left ankle."
Evelyn Claire furrowed her brow looking at the police: "You cannot physically harm me, nor can you coerce a confession, otherwise, as soon as I get out, I will definitely sue you."
Seeing her uncooperative demeanor, the policeman immediately turned around to have a policewoman help remove Evelyn Claire’s clothing and reveal her ankle.
When they saw the small flower tattoo on her ankle, Kay Forrest and Jane Quinlan exchanged a look.
Jane’s expression turned cold: "Evelyn Claire, you really are full of lies.
You were behind the courier incident.
And that threatening video was also filmed by you."
"You’re talking nonsense."
"The person who filmed the video has a small flower tattoo just like that on her ankle.
Your denials are futile."
Evelyn Claire frowned and looked at her: "Jane, there are many people who have tattoos on their ankles, how can you wrong me like this."
Kay stepped forward to pull Jane behind him and looked coldly at Evelyn Claire.
"Just taking a photo of the tattoo on your ankle and comparing it to the screenshot from the video will confirm whether it was you.
Don’t you know, the police have many more methods of solving cases these days."
The two policemen exchanged a look, "Go get the camera."
Kay continued: "If you confess now, I might let this go.
But if you don’t, once the experts verify it and it comes back to you, I’ll sue you directly."
Evelyn Claire looked at Kay Forrest, hesitated for quite a while before biting her lip: "It was me."
"Why didn’t you admit it just now."
Evelyn Claire was silent for a moment before saying, "Because this isn’t what I really wanted to do."
"Who instructed you?"
"Director Forrest should have guessed it," she said, eyes filled with a hint of guilt, "In the company, who else but Evie would hate you so much."
When Jane Quinlan heard this, she also felt a surge of panic. It was related to Evie Larkin again?
She thought Evie Larkin had already disappeared from her life.
She had even wondered if she had wronged Evie Larkin before.
But why does it always come back to her, after all is said and done?
Kay Forrest’s face grew even colder: "What did she offer you?"
"She didn’t give me any benefits, because I betrayed her in front of you before.
She always said I owed her a favor and I had to pay it back.
After all, it’s a fact that I took fifty thousand dollars from you back then.
It was because of this... that I helped her."
Kay Forrest snorted coldly and, changing his demeanor, took Jane Quinlan by the hand and left.
Jane Quinlan looked at his angry face and asked, "Forrest, where are we going?"
"I’ll take you home first and then go settle the score with Evie Larkin."
Jane Quinlan held him back: "We can’t just take Evelyn Claire’s word for it, can we?"
"That Evie Larkin is exactly that kind of despicable and shameless person."
Jane Quinlan frowned, not thinking Evie Larkin was an upright person either.
But they had talked before, and she would admit it in other matters, so there was no reason for her to refuse to acknowledge the courier issue outright.
Weren’t they just fighting over the courier issue?
"Forrest, what I’m more worried about now is Wendy.
Evelyn Claire says Wendy’s disappearance has nothing to do with her, how can that be possible?
Wendy has clearly been investigating her these past few days.
Even I feel Evelyn Claire’s words are obviously problematic."
Kay Forrest snorted coldly: "It seems I’ve underestimated this Evelyn Claire.
I thought someone who has read thousands of books should be smart enough, not to do such malicious things.
But now it seems... Wendy’s situation is indeed precarious."
Jane Quinlan covered her mouth with her hand: "Wendy hasn’t already... been harmed, has she?"
"This woman is now delaying time, without actual evidence, the police can only detain her for 24 hours.
Once the 24 hours are up, she’ll be free to leave."
Jane Quinlan bit gently on her finger joint, as if thinking of something: "What about the bloodstain on the rope?
She said the bloodstain was hers, but what if it isn’t? Would it prove that she’s lying?"
"The results won’t come out that quickly," he shook his head: "Forget it, human life is at stake, we should focus on finding Wendy first."
Kay Forrest first took her to the chief of police’s office, where the chief warmly received him.
"Director Forrest, rest assured, we will definitely give you a satisfactory response on this matter."
"I just want to ask one thing, where was this woman caught?"
"In a taxi at the highway exit on her way back to Anchester."
"The highway exit?" Kay Forrest raised his eyebrows as if thinking of something.
A staff member who was at work in the company in the morning caught a taxi from the highway a few hours later.
Even if she went to the nearest exit and made a loop back, it would take at least an hour and a half...
"Chief Gao, could I borrow a few people to check individually the cars that entered the highway after nine o’clock this morning, to see how many got off at the nearest exit?
I suspect Evelyn Claire took Wendy out of Anchester and then returned.
If that’s the case, she wouldn’t have been able to take a taxi back but would have had to drive herself -- the police checking the surveillance should pay close attention to the drivers of every car entering the highway."
"Of course you can, I’ll send someone right away.
You should go back and rest, Director Forrest. I will have my men step up the investigation."
Kay Forrest nodded: "Then I’ll be waiting for Chief Gao’s good news."
After leading Jane Quinlan away and sending her home, he saw that he was about to leave, Jane Quinlan grabbed him, her face filled with concern: "Where are you going?"
"I have some things to take care of, I’ll be back soon.
Go take a shower and lie down in bed.
In an hour, no, in half an hour, I’ll be back to keep you company."
Jane Quinlan wouldn’t let go: "Have you decided to go see Evie Larkin?"
"Don’t worry about this, I’ll make that Evie Larkin leave Eldoria.
She’s crossed my line, no one can talk me out of this."
