Chapter 447: Cloak
I looked at Ai and could very clearly see the concerned look in her eyes. I mean, I did just accidentally tear my bag, but I don’t think it is that hard, right? I mean, many bags end up being ruined over time every year. Yeah, that makes sense. It isn’t anything weird.
"My more worrying thing is," I muttered and stared at the textbooks exposed to everyone in the class. I think putting them in the desk during the entire day is going to be my only option.
I checked my wallet to see if I brought enough cash for lunch, and luckily, it looked like I did. My only other worry would be to explain to Sensei how her lunch was nowhere to be found today. I’m sorry, I will treat you to some great food today. Please forgive me, Sensei.
"Who are you praying to, Kazu-kun?" Ai asked, walking over to my seat.
"God of destruction," I said, and she looked at me, confused. Her eyes scanned my bag again and got set on me again. "I have to buy a new one anyway, it was pretty old. Would you like to join me in looking for a new bag?"
"As if I would let you go out without me," she said, sitting on my desk and shining a bright smile my way.
"Beautiful as always," I spoke out without hesitation, but soon realized where we were, and my face turned bright red. I looked up to see Ai also having her face turn into a tomato. We have been dating for so long, and stuff like this makes her embarrassed? Then again, I am not the one to say anything here. It’s nice to see her reacting so cutely to these comments even now.
I felt a sharp glare from a lot of my class, but I decided to ignore it. Ai’s friends joined us, and all of them looked at me awkwardly. I know what they wanted to ask, but I guess they don’t really know how to bring it up without sounding too insensitive. I can always say I fell on the way and blood filled up in my eye, but that would be quite a dumb thing to say since it was my iris that turned red. I don’t remember the last time things like that happened.
"Mind telling me what the big idea is grouping up here even after the bell rang?" Sensei said, appearing right behind them. They got startled by it and stumbled a little on their feet.
"When did you get here, Sensei? You didn’t even make a sound," I asked, trying to break the silence.
"I underwent special training to take care of brats like you," she said, cracking her knuckles. Come on now, violence against students is so wrong! Spare us, please! "Get back to your seats right now."
All of them scrambled away from my seat, and Sensei stared at my seat desk for a bit, looking around for something. "Is something the matter, Sensei?"
"Where is your bag?" she asked, and my body stiffened. I slowly pulled the bag out of my desk, which I had put along with my books to hide it from her eyes. "What on earth did you do?"
"It was pretty old and so...I accidentally tore it," I said with sweat dropping down my forehead. It was a lie, and she knew it. This bag wasn’t old; I bought it just last year, and she was the one who got me the thing.
"I see," she said coldly, glaring at me. I didn’t mean to waste your hard-earned money like this, I promise! "Get a new one by tomorrow."
"Roger!" I said, saluting her, which only got me a hit on the head with her register.
She walked towards the board and started to take the attendance for the class. She still hasn’t said anything about my eye, which was clearly more apparent than my bag. I can guess a very good reason as to why she mentioned that first. I’m sorry in advance, Sensei. I don’t know what sort of explanation she has pulled up her sleeve, but if anything, I would like for her to say it pretty soon. After finishing the attendance, she looked up and pointed at me. "Right, Shiba, put this one," she said, tossing something at me across the room, which I caught. I looked at it and saw that it was an eye patch. How did she even get hold of this? "I asked at the infirmary about your condition, and for now, they said it’s better to cover your eye with it."
Ah, she made up a story.
"Does the nurse still not know what is wrong with me?" I asked her and she nodded.
"She said if it’s hurting at all, it’s okay to leave it be for now, but you’d better get checked by an eye doctor," she said, and I nodded my head. With her explanation, most people looked somewhat convinced, and then again, no one will be brave enough to ever go against Sensei unless they have a death wish.
I put on the eye patch over my right eye and looked forward. Some of my vision was gone due to that, but it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience for me. I could still very well see most of the things I needed to see, so I just continued to study. I tried my best at least.
As the day went by, Ai would always come to my seat between classes, shutting off anyone outside her close friends who tried to approach her. She was still not fully comfortable around those people, but did feel a lot more comfortable being in the class thanks to us. Haruka and the others didn’t really push the matter about Ai’s behaviour when we were in class, which I really appreciated. I know we would need to give some explanation to them later on, so we have to come up with a good excuse. To be fair, there are a lot of things we have to explain to them. Sigh, this is going to be troublesome.
For lunch, I grabbed a little yakisoba bun while Ai had a full lunch set. She did seem a lot hungrier than me, so I did end up giving her most of my food too, since I wasn’t that hungry for some reason. I didn’t really have a big breakfast either, but my hunger was nowhere to be seen. Why is that? Then again, why did I even fall asleep again? Ugh, I can’t remember.
"Say aaah," Ai said, holding up her spoon against my face, breaking me out of my line of thought. I looked at the spoon for a bit and then opened my mouth as she fed me the food. Since we are in the cafeteria, I could feel tons of jealous glares thrown at me, but I decided to just ignore them. It’s been so many months already. Give up, people. "Is everything okay?"
"Huh? Oh yeah, just that..."
"What?" she asked, leaning against me. Her face was so close to me that her scent had fully covered my sense of smell. It felt so familiar, so comforting. Like candy...
"Ai, did I feed this morning?" I asked her, and she smiled at me softly.
"Yes, you did. Aaah, you were so cute, just gently drinking my blood, holding me like a little baby. It was so adorable I could lock the doors and just let you do that all day," she whispered, holding her face in her hands, speaking in a more mature tone. "I know Kazu-kun wouldn’t mind me taking care of him~"
"I- yea, I wouldn’t mind that," I said with my face heating up lightly. I definitely won’t mind that; if anything, I would quite enjoy that. Okay, enough daydreaming. Maybe the training with Ethan exhausted me mentally so much that I just fell asleep while drinking Ai’s blood. I still don’t fully understand everything that is going on with me, so I can only speculate. If anything, I know I can trust Ai.
I stopped worrying about that topic, and we went on with our day. Once, we were the last two left in the class. I moved to the front seat with Ai. We were waiting for Sensei to arrive so we could leave with her for the VEO later on. After we make sure she eats.
"Shiba...food..." A zombie said, walking into them room. Her body looked extremely limp. Don’t tell me she had a mission last night. Seriously, how much do these demons make her work on a daily basis?
"I’m sorry, Sensei. I woke up quite late today, so..." I said and looked at her awkwardly, and saw the entire world crashing before her eyes.
"No food?" she asked, hoping that we were joking with her, but sadly, that wasn’t the case.
"Nope," I said and picked up my textbooks. "So...guess who gets to eat outside...?"
"I wanted a home-cooked meal, though," she whined, and I bowed my head, apologizing.
"I’m sorry, Sensei, but I was too exhausted to fully wake up on time and cook for us," I said, and looked up at her, and she just stood there and let out a sigh.
"Man, I was looking forward to that meal," she said.
"This is why I tell you to eat during lunch," I said, and she just shrugged her shoulders.
"Whatever I make tastes a million times worse than what you make, so no. Plus, home-cooked nutritious meals are a must for a healthy working body," she said in a matter-of-fact tone, and I just chuckled. I will make so much extra food from now on.
