Totsuki Culinary Academy’s winter training program was not publicly announced; it was conducted privately.
After Renz and Erina married, they rarely visited Totsuki Resort. Even employee meetings and Nakiri family gatherings were only attended if they were particularly significant.
Since Renz didn’t marry into the family in a way that would require him to handle the Nakiri family’s business affairs, it wasn’t his responsibility. He didn’t attend employee meetings, and the Nakiri family gatherings were beyond Ishihara Hira’s reach. As a result, many Totsuki Group employees had a very vague, even mysterious, impression of Renz, the son-in-law.
But mysterious doesn’t mean the subordinates are foolish. Ishihara Hira had a strong feeling that his worst fear might have come true. Perhaps, sometimes, the more you hope something won’t happen, the more likely it is to occur.
Ishihara Hira’s hand trembled as he held his chopsticks. The more he thought about his previous actions, the more he felt he had pushed himself onto a cliff, attempting to ride a bicycle on a tightrope.
His sister-in-law, Alice, was here. The Young Ladys private secretary, Arato Hisako, was also here. Dojima Gin’s patronage was already a strong indicator. What else could possibly be needed to confirm it? The only thing preventing a death sentence was that the Young Lady herself hadn’t made an appearance. Perhaps he was just a chef with good connections to others.
Harboring this illusion, a tall, beautiful woman emerging from the back kitchen shattered Ishihara Hira’s fantasy.
Erina walked out of the back kitchen. Her gaze pierced through Ishihara Hira’s body like a blade. Inside the kitchen, Erina could still hear the commotion in the dining area.
Renz might not hold grudges, but Erina certainly did not forget. She walked step by step towards him. Ishihara Hira’s face turned pale. It was over. If the Erina-sama wanted him out of a job, he could be immediately removed from his position at Totsuki Resort. And given the Erina-sama’s somewhat "overbearing" personality, no matter what amends he tried to make, it would be futile.
The approaching Erina, with her angelic face, each step seemed to toll the death knell for Ishihara Hira’s career.
Each step pressured Ishihara Hira’s psyche. When Erina reached Renz’s side, this pressure already weighed heavily on Ishihara Hira’s shoulders. He bowed his head; merely being stared at by Erina filled him with an unshakeable sense of "dread."
I’m going to die. How should I apologize? Ishihara Hira didn’t even dare to contemplate resistance.
"Husband, what’s wrong? Is something the matter?" Erina asked, tilting her head. In reality, this question was subtly probing Renz’s thoughts. If Renz had any dissatisfaction, Erina would directly retort with, "From now on, you no longer need to work for the Nakiri family," as a conclusion.
Erina recognized the suit the man was wearing; it was a standard Nakiri family uniform, dedicated work attire. And couldn’t Nakiri family staff be dismissed whenever Erina wanted? After all, even if she married out, Erina was still a Nakiri, still the eldest princess.
Now, a single word from Renz could decide Ishihara Hira’s employment. To dismiss someone, frankly, was just a word from Erina. She could even go further and ensure the person couldn’t find any company willing to hire him.
If Erina truly handled it, Ishihara Hira’s normal resignation would already be the best outcome.
However, Renz wasn’t so harsh as to make someone lose their job over a few words. "Nothing, this gentleman just wanted to experience my cooking," Renz thought for a moment and decided to give the man a chance. This was actually a small matter; a customer expressing their "dissatisfaction." While this "dissatisfaction" was somewhat harsh, it wasn’t enough to warrant losing one’s job. Erina was taking it too far.
Ishihara Hira, as if saved, quickly buried his head in his food. He was immensely grateful that Renz was willing to speak up for him; that single sentence had almost certainly saved his career. The already delicious food became even more appetizing after Renz’s words.
"That’s terrifying," Alice watched the battle from the next table. "The aura from Erina."
"Only Renz can rein in the Erina-sama. Otherwise, if the Erina-sama got truly angry, that guy would definitely lose his job," Hisako Arato sighed. "However, the Young
Lady seems a bit unhappy."
"Indeed, living with the Erina-sama is a difficult task." As she spoke, Erina walked back into the back kitchen alone.
Her eyes glanced back at Renz, seemingly dissatisfied with his actions. Renz also knew about Erina’s displeasure. Erina was giving Renz an opportunity to vent his "displeasure," but Renz made an unexpected choice and didn’t follow Erina’s lead. Erina chose to respect Renz’s decision but didn’t hide her unhappiness.
Her thoughts were definitely at odds with Renz’s, otherwise she wouldn’t have acted this way.
Headache. Renz patted his head and walked into the back kitchen.
"Erina, what’s wrong now?" Renz asked, finding Erina leaning against a table, arms crossed.
"You handled this matter incorrectly," Erina spoke directly, not bottling up her thoughts.
"What’s wrong with it? Do I have to fire someone for it to be right?" Renz didn’t immediately see anything wrong. This was a complete clash of philosophies; Renz’s
philosophy differed from Erina’s.
"This is why you can only marry into the family," Erina said, not mincing words this time. In public, Renz needed to save face, and Erina would grant it, because he was her man. But in private, whatever discussions or emotional issues arose, Erina would speak directly, otherwise, bottled up, they would only become a fuse for marital failure.
"You’re only suited to be a second-in-command, not a leader," Erina continued. "You have ability, but no ambition. You have magnanimity, but not enough assertiveness. You have insight, but lack the necessary
means."
Pointed criticism. Renz didn’t deny these points. He was indeed not sharp enough in the methods of a leader, which was why the Nakiri family was later jointly controlled with Erina. Renz alone could sometimes be indecisive.
"Do you think my dismissing him would have any impact?" Erina said coldly. "You’re using my prestige to grant him favors." She continued, "His disrespect towards you is disrespect towards me."
"I just thought about someone his age, he probably has a child or something. It’s not right for him to lose his job over a single sentence," Renz’s perspective was one of empathy. He also had a child; if he found a job after struggling to find one, he wouldn’t want to be dismissed either.
"Then if he could control his mouth and be respectful and polite to everyone, would this situation even occur?
Ultimately, it’s his own mistake."
"When you make a mistake, you have to bear the consequences," Erina said, looking at Renz. "Laws are slowly extended based on this, to forcibly punish those unwilling to bear the consequences of their mistakes, leading to today’s rule of law. Of course, I don’t deny that sometimes the law is harsher on the poor." Renz surprisingly found Erina’s words quite reasonable. But upon closer thought, it wasn’t without flaws. She almost convinced Renz.
"But the problem is, his one sentence doesn’t warrant a punishment to the extent of losing his job." This was as absurd as stealing a piece of cake and being sentenced to execution; the punishment was too severe.
"But that’s not a reason for you to casually give him a chance," Erina continued. "He might be grateful to you now, but without the memory of punishment, he’ll quickly forget these things. Next time, he’ll act the same way."
"You indulged him."
"Then Erina, what do you think I should do?" Renz said in silence.
"You can’t always expect me to spoon-feed you," Erina said with some exasperation. "When we’re doing that, and I say no, you always give up. I’m asking, do you genuinely
care for your wife, or are you just too timid?"
Erina rarely made suggestive remarks. But she truly couldn’t stand Renz’s overly conservative views sometimes. She needed a Renz full of ambition and assertiveness, not a Renz who wanted to sit down and discuss everything slowly with her.
Wait a minute! Erina suddenly saw Renz’s figure lean forward. Renz’s face held a hint of apology. He said, "I didn’t handle this well. How about this, you can look up that employee’s record later."
With a child to care for, combined with Erina’s long-term "suppression," Renz’s edges had long been smoothed down, gradually losing his fighting spirit. During his time marrying into the family, he had been "spoon-fed" by Erina to the point of being somewhat "disabled." Every time, he just thought about doing his job well and protecting this foundation. As for further ambition, Renz had almost none.
Erina’s words awakened him from his dream. A man relying on a woman for everything is indeed improper.
Renz always acted cautiously, safeguarding his interests, offending neither this side nor that. His sword gleamed, but only showing a glimmer of its brilliance. This time, he had saved face for that employee, but hadn’t deeply considered his actions; it was indeed a kindness that was almost inhuman.
And the most correct approach wasn’t actually to fire the person on the spot, as that would be without justification. The true approach was to investigate the employee’s background, check if their usual record had any issues. If there were usual issues, dismissing them would have no psychological burden, and it would cleanse the Nakiri family of unhealthy practices. But if their usual record was clean, then a penalty of two months’ salary should still be imposed and announced within the group, to make an example.
"I will handle this matter properly."
"I promise, starting today, this situation will not happen again."
Then, Renz lowered his head, and without any reaction
from Erina, he opened his mouth and extended his tongue into Erina’s tightly closed teeth.
Erina’s eyes widened. Her kisses with Renz had always stopped at their lips touching. Tongue kissing, due to the issue of the God’s Tongue, had never been attempted.
Renz had never made such a request either. How... how did he suddenly become so aggressive?
