Chapter 1549 The Cause of Illness

With Zhan Mohan's connections and Jing Yan's introduction, they managed to contact a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist in China.

However, things became increasingly bizarre. No matter how these specialists researched and examined Wen Xueshan, they couldn't pinpoint any physical ailment that explained her deteriorating condition.

"We apologize. We have conducted all possible examinations on this patient, yet we cannot determine what is causing her condition to worsen. Our findings are consistent with the hospital's. There are no issues with the medication or treatment either. This is a situation we have never encountered before."

The experts looked troubled, as if facing an insurmountable illness.

Wei Yumeng felt a bit awkward. She wasn't doubting the experts' authority, but rather felt that something was amiss with the entire situation.

Even for a complex illness, with current medical standards, there should be some observable physical changes or a clear locus of the problem. At most, it would be a condition that currently has no cure.

Yet, Wen Xueshan's condition was deteriorating without any identifiable issues, which felt incredibly strange.

"Thank you all for making this trip. I appreciate your dedication to this matter, but... I think we need to consider other approaches for her condition."

The experts sighed with a hint of shame. Just then, someone suddenly suggested,

"Instead of focusing on physiological problems, perhaps you could consider consulting a psychologist. While most hospitals can manage prenatal depression, and it can often be alleviated with daily attention, I noticed that this patient seemed more resistant to examinations than others. It's possible that what appears to be an illness is actually caused by her own mind."

This reminded Wei Yumeng of a psychology book she had read.

A person's psychological state can indeed affect their physical health. If Wen Xueshan didn't want to get better and believed her condition was more severe, it was highly likely that her physical symptoms would indeed worsen.

It seemed she really needed to explore this avenue.

After seeing the experts out, Wei Yumeng arrived outside Wen Xueshan's hospital room.

As she was about to push the door open, she noticed a pleasant atmosphere between Wen Xueshan and Qiu Zhun.

"I'm sorry, Azhun. My health must be causing you a lot of trouble. I don't want this either, and you have to come to take care of me every day. I can manage on my own, you know. The doctors and nurses here are taking good care of me. You don't have to go to such lengths."

As Wen Xueshan spoke, her eyes looked at Qiu Zhun with happiness, as if she wasn't at all saddened by inconveniencing him or guilty about what she had said.

Qiu Zhun looked at her with good-natured patience. "You're carrying our child. If I don't take care of you, who else will?"

Wen Xueshan smiled gently. This was perhaps the most genuine tenderness Wei Yumeng had ever seen from her.

Wei Yumeng could understand. Being by the side of the person she loved most every day must be an incredibly happy experience. Moreover, if not for the events that had transpired, Qiu Zhun might not have accepted her.

At this thought, Wei Yumeng paused slightly. She seemed to understand, and she might have figured out Wen Xueshan's condition.

She then left the room and went to find Jing Yan, wanting to confirm her suspicion.

Jing Yan was reviewing Wen Xueshan's medical records with the hospital doctors when he seemed surprised to see Wei Yumeng.

"Why are you here?"

Wei Yumeng looked at Jing Yan. "I think I might know what's going on with Wen Xueshan."

Jing Yan and the doctors exchanged glances before turning their attention back to Wei Yumeng.

"Tell us."

"For Wen Xueshan, this period in the hospital is likely the happiest time of her life. And I believe she understands, after experiencing so much, that once she leaves the hospital, once her health improves, or once the baby is born, Qiu Zhun's attitude towards her will once again be uncertain. She, who always desired Qiu Zhun's attention, would want this period to last longer. If her illness doesn't improve, or even worsens, Qiu Zhun will only care for her more attentively and worry about her more. This is precisely what she wants to see."

Wei Yumeng said this with a serious expression, looking at the other doctors. "Therefore, I believe it's possible that Wen Xueshan has no serious physical problems, and her current ailments are entirely psychosomatic."

Wei Yumeng's words made Jing Yan ponder. After a while, he responded, "I agree, there is a possibility. There are many such cases in psychology. Similar to reports of extraordinary individuals on television, often it's not that they possess supernatural abilities, but rather that they seek attention from others. They even convince themselves of their own powers, thereby deceiving many."

One of the doctors added, "Our investigation has consistently focused on Ms. Wen's physical condition. This is the first time we've considered this possibility. Given her prior history of depression, it's certainly plausible that changes in her environment and psychological state have led to her current situation."

With a conclusion reached, the doctors and Jing Yan decided to formulate a treatment plan in this direction.

However, psychological issues cannot be cured by medication or shock therapy. Heartaches can only be resolved by identifying the root cause.

Thus, Wei Yumeng had to call Qiu Zhun out again and explain the conclusion to him.

"You're saying... her current condition is all caused by hysteria?" Qiu Zhun found it hard to believe.

Wei Yumeng nodded. "Currently, the doctors and I have reached a highly probable conclusion, but we cannot be completely certain yet, so we need your help."

Qiu Zhun thought for a moment before saying, "Alright, tell me, how can I help?"

Meanwhile, Jing Yan, after finishing his work, rushed over.

"Since her current situation is due to her desire to prolong it, you should talk more about her life after discharge. The more beautiful the arrangements, the more they resonate with her heart, the better."

Wei Yumeng also nodded. "Exactly. If the future awaiting her is more appealing than her current life, perhaps her condition will improve."

Qiu Zhun, however, hesitated upon hearing this. If he only had to care for Wen Xueshan during this period, he could maintain a semblance of friendliness and cooperate.

But what about afterwards? Would he have to pretend to look forward to a happy life with her and their child? Imagine the possibility of even a wedding and honeymoon.

The thought made him feel that things couldn't get any worse, because the person he wanted to be with was not Wen Xueshan at all.

Even just to imagine these things deceitfully with Wen Xueshan was difficult for him.

The only reason he had been able to endure this period was the hope that once Wen Xueshan recovered, he could appropriately propose separation and sever ties with her completely.

"I... I'll try," he could only say for now. He couldn't let Wei Yumeng down.
